Stanisław Toegel

Before the outbreak of the Second World War Toegel was working as a caricaturist in Lemberg. After the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising he was captured and deported to Göttingen as a forced labourer. During this time he drew secret caricatures of the Nazis. When he was liberated by the British forces in 1945 he moved to a camp for Displaced Persons (DPs) in Osnabrück. Here he completed two cycles of caricatures on the Hitler régime: “Hitleriada furiosa” and “Hitleriada macabre” were published by the Antoni Markiewicz publishing house in Celle in 1946. They are now known all over the world. Equally in Celle, he published a children’s book in the Strażnica publishing house belonging to Tadeusz Starczewski in 1947. The two publishers were clearly part of a circle of Polish DPs. Toegel’s caricatures are amazing documents from the immediate post-war era.
