Meppen Versen
In 1955, the remains of 71 unknown prisoners from other camps from the area of Emslandu, originally buried in Bockhorst, were transferred here. Meanwhile, between November 1944 and March 1945 originally 566 victims were buried at the cemetery in Versen - they were deceased prisoners from 16 countries. In 1953, exhumation was carried out to identify the deceased - the remains of 269 were transported to their homelands (specifically to Italy), hence the present number of the victims buried here.
Such a high number of deaths in a short time resulted from very severe labour in inhumane conditions. After the management of the camp was taken over by SS in November 1944, the prisoners were used throughout the whole winter to build defensive fortifications. Because of hard labour, insufficient nutrition and clothes as well as violence used by the guards, the prisoners died massively.
On the 25th of March 1945 Allied Forces liberated the camp. The prisoners who survived were transported to Cloppenburg. Today there is a criminal prison in the location of former camp No. 9. In front of the main entrance there is a showcase informing the visitors about the camp's history. In front of the entrance to the plot of victims at the cemetery in Versen there are four memorial plaques bearing the names and nationalities of 175 victims buried here. A large cross and several monuments with inscriptions in Polish, German and Duch that were originally placed here, were removed after exhumations carried out in 1953.
