Most of the prisoners were transferred here from other camps. The average stay lasted between one and six months. The inmates worked on two shifts for 12 hours a day, mainly in a quarry, regardless of the weather. From 1942 they were also forced to repair aircraft engines. Insufficient food, violence, devastating work and severe punishments were compounded with medical experiments. In August 1943, 86 Jews were murdered in a gas chamber because their skeletons were needed for the "Ahnenerbe" (ancestral heritage) project.

Forced labour was performed by deportees from all over Europe. The largest number of them came from Poland, other large groups were Russians and Norwegians. Prisoners from the sub-camps were only released in the first months of 1945.
