Despite the demands made by the Arbeitskreis Friedhof Hochstraße association, concerning the creation of a memorial site, the cemetery remained in a poor condition until 1996, when a memorial plaque was solemnly unveiled in the Velpke necropolis. From that moment on, the cemetery, which was no longer in use, began to be cleaned up and gradually changed into a memorial site. Thanks to the cooperation between the city and the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites in 2001, a place commemorating the victims of Nazi despotism was created in Braunschweig.
