According to the information provided by the inhabitants of Bodenfelde, Józef Krzyżański was deprived of his status of a prisoner of war a few months after being captured (just like thousands of other Polish prisoners of war) and sent by the Nordheim labour office for forced labour at one of the farms in Bodenfelde.

On the burial list, there is a note reading "Polish prisoner of war", but there is no information about the cause of death. The grave was recorded as protected by the law on war graves. The tombstone was erected in 1946; until the 1990s (and probably until today), the grave was looked after by the descendants of the farmer that Józef Krzyżański worked for.
