Dutkiewicz, Jan Józef, Polish painter, member of the “Munich School”, student at the Art Academies in Berlin and Munich. *8.12.1818 Chociszewo near Wongrowitz/Wągrowiec, †10.2.1902 Inowrazlaw/Inowrocław. Estate owner at Zalesie near Doruchów/Zalesie (powiat ostrzeszowski). A-levels at the Maria Magdalena Grammar School in Poznan. 1837-40: he studies at the Berlin Art Academy under the history and genre painter Heinrich Anton Dähling (1773-1850). On the 5.11.1842 he enrols in the painting class at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After a few years in Rome he returns to Poznan via Paris and Brussels. After completing his military service in a regiment of the Prussian army in Poznan he works as a teacher of drawing in a girls’ grammar school, but loses his job because of his participation in the 1848 Revolution. Subsequently he lives on the family estate, Radoliński, in Jarotschin/Jarocin , before finally returning to his parents’ estate in Zalesie, which he runs for the next thirty years. In his final years he loses his estate, and initially works as a treasurer before returning to painting. During his studies in Berlin he copies the paintings of Dutch masters. In Rome he creates historic scenes and paints human figures from living models (“Hermit”, “Old Knight”). Around 1848 he paints the portrait of Duchess Radolińska. At the end of his life he paints dozens of portraits of families from Kujavia, portraits of his own family and self-portraits. His works can be found in the national museums in Cracow and Poznań, in the Biblioteka Jagiellońska in Cracow, in the Muzeum Regionalne im. Wojciechy Dutkiewicz in Rogożno Wielkopolskie and in the Muzeum im. Adama Mickiewicza in Śmiełów.
