Chłapowski, Alfred Stefan Franciszek (Alfred von Chlapowo Chlapowski), 1904-08 member of the Reichstag of the German Empire. *5.10.1874 Bonikowo, district of Kosten/Kościan, †19.2.1940 Kościan, Lord of the Manor, publicist, Member of the Sejm, Minister, diplomat. After completing his studies at the Maria-Magdalena-grammar school in Poznan 1894 he studied National Economics (primarily agricultural politics), law, history and philosophy in Berlin, Paris, Halle and Munich. In 1899 he became a Doctor of Business Sciences in Munich. In 1897 and 1899 respectively he took over his father’s estates in Bonikowo and Chłapowo, in the district of Schroda/Środa Wielkopolska. Till 1903 he travelled through a huge number of European countries, to Asia Minor, North Africa and the Sudan. He was a member of the board of agricultural societies and cooperatives, worked for a variety of Polish newspapers and was a member of the board of the Teatr Polski w Poznaniu, the Polish Theatre in Poznan. In March 1904 and January 1907 he was elected as a member of the Polish parliamentary group in the German Reichstag for the constituency of Schroda-Schrimm/Środa Wielkopolska-Śrem with majorities of 78.59% and 77.65% respectively. He was a member of a huge number of select committees including those for the laws on stock exchanges, coinage, Reich banknotes, petitions, the Reich budget and motor vehicles. As a member of the Order of Malta and Malta’s representative in the International Red Cross, during the First World War he was the head of hospitals in Calais Sear, Lithuania, in the Balkans and in France. In 1918 he became a member of the Workers and Soldiers Council in Kosten, a member of the Poznan Regional Parliament and commander of the People’s Guard. In 1922 he was elected to the Sejm; in 1923 Polish Minister of Agriculture; between 1924 and 1936 he was the Polish Ambassador in France.
